Telegram username questions

What are Telegram's username rules?

A Telegram public username must be 5–32 characters long and can contain letters (a–z), numbers (0–9), and underscores (_). It must start with a letter, cannot end with an underscore, and cannot contain two underscores in a row. Usernames are case-insensitive.

Can I change my Telegram username?

Yes — you can change it any time in Settings → Username. When you do, your old t.me/username link stops working immediately and becomes available for someone else, so update any links you've shared.

Do I need a username on Telegram?

No. A public username is optional. Without one, people can only add you if they have your phone number. Setting a username gives you a shareable t.me/ link and lets people find you without sharing your number.

Why does this tool say 'appears valid'?

Postlia validates your username against Telegram's format rules — length, allowed characters, and structure. We cannot check real-time availability; only Telegram knows which usernames are taken. Open the t.me link or try to set the username in Telegram to confirm it's free.

What is the difference between my Telegram name and username?

Your name (and optional last name) is your display name and can be anything, including spaces and emoji. Your username is the unique @handle that powers your public t.me/ link and search — that's what these rules apply to.

Can a Telegram username start with a number?

No. Telegram requires usernames to start with a letter. Numbers and underscores are allowed elsewhere in the username, just not as the first character.
